Photo Diary: The Umbrellas

June 25, 2021

In October, 1991, a group of AICA-USA members travelled to a valley approximately 60 miles north of Los Angeles to view the large-scale land installation “The Umbrellas” by Christo and Jean-Claude. On view for a period of eighteen days, the 1,760 yellow umbrellas dotting the hilly California countryside were echoed in a sister installation of 1,340 blue umbrellas in Ibaraki, Japan. On the 30th anniversary of this special trip, AICA-USA executive vice president Judith Stein shares a selection of photographs she took on the occasion.
